Photo 5- Toxic Waste Return to Europe from Indonesia

This is one of 113 containers sent by Great Britain and the Netherlands to Indonesia as “scrap metal” discovered to actually contain electronic scraps, sulfuric acid, and toxic heavy metals.  All 113 containers are being shipped back to the countries of origin and the investigations have begun about other shipments.

Their are fears that this discovery was simply one of many toxic waste shipments that may be polluting areas around the world.  Richard Gutierrez, Executive Director of Ban Toxics in the Philippines, explained the scope of the problem, “Governments can not handle this problem single-handedly. There has to be better coordination and implementation of international and national laws. If not, developing countries like Indonesia will become the dumping grounds for the world’s toxic wastes.
